According to the tradition that developed during the Byzantine period, St. George was born in Lod. Georgius was a soldier in the Roman army who embraced Christianity. In 302, Diocletian issued an edict against the Christians. Georgius was ordered to take part in the suppression of the Christians, but instead he confessed that he was a Christian and criticized the emperor's decision. Diocletian tried to convert Georgius to his religion, but he refused and the emperor ordered his death by torture as a traitor. After severe torture, Georgios was beheaded on the wall of Nicomedia on April 23, 303. In the Christian tradition, the saint became "Georgius the dragon slayer", symbolizing the pagan faith. After his death, Georgios was buried in Cappadocia, and in the 5th century his head was brought to Lod and buried there.
