The Rosary The Holy Rosary Jesus says that it is not enough to pray, for prayer must lead us to do – as He did – the will of the Heavenly Father: "I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done" (Mt. 7:21; Jn. 13:15). "Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example, that we should follow in his steps... and that, dead to sin, we might live for God" (1 Pet. 2:21, 24). As the risen Christ lives for God, so you also, dead to sin, live for God in Christ Jesus (Rom. 6:8-11). James the Greater was born twelve years before Christ in Galilee and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, according to the Holy Scriptures. He was, therefore, the brother of John the Evangelist. James the Greater is always cited as one of the first three apostles, and is among Jesus' favorites, along with Peter and Andrew. He is called "the Greater" because of the namesake apostle, James son of Alphaeus, known as "the Lesser." In various biblical passages, we can see that Jesus had chosen apostles to witness special events of his mission. One of them was James the Greater, whom we see at his side during the healing of Peter's mother-in-law, the resurrection of Jairus' daughter, the Transfiguration of the Lord, and his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. It is said that, after the resurrection of Christ, James went to Spain, traveling from north to south, evangelizing, and for this reason he was declared its patron saint. Later he returned to Jerusalem, where he converted hundreds of people. Because of false testimony, he was arrested and accused of leading the people against the emperor's orders. The penalty for this crime was death. He is always cited as one of the first three apostles, and is among Jesus' favorites, along with Peter and Andrew. The sentence was carried out during the Easter festivities in the year 42. Thus, James the Greater became the first of the apostles to shed his blood for his faith in Jesus Christ.
