Les cowboys : Nota Bene explore ce grand mythe américain !

To mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, Benjamin Brillaud, aka "Nota Bene," takes us back in time to the Wild West. This journey through the vast landscapes of the American West provides an opportunity for a surprising investigation into the greatest myth in American history: the cowboy. Throughout popular culture, from literature to video games, comics to film, the cowboy appears as the quintessential white man. The quintessential American hero, with his hat, boots, and Colt revolvers, virile, courageous, solitary, civilizing the wild, he embodies justice and democracy. On this journey across the American West, from Texas to Wyoming, Benjamin meets historians and contemporary cowboys. He then reveals a very different version of these humble cowboys on horseback, who undertook long, grueling treks across the plains, armed with a lasso and, contrary to popular belief, rarely with a firearm! We discover that the first cowboys originated in Mexico, and that African American cowboys also existed! As for cowgirls, they were rare, but female ranchers and even ranch owners did exist!
