The Dead Space (2023) remake opens with system engineer Isaac Clarke arriving on the USG Ishimura alongside a small security and repair team. Dispatched to answer an emergency distress call, they discover a nightmarish bloodbath where the crew has been slaughtered and mutated by a hostile alien scourge. The game's introduction sets up a desperate rescue mission intertwined with a routine maintenance call. Isaac’s primary motivation for taking the assignment is personal: his romantic partner, Nicole Brennan, is a medical officer stationed aboard the colossal planetary mining vessel. Upon attempting to dock, the team's shuttle (the USG Kellion) suffers a catastrophic malfunction, leading to a crash landing in the Ishimura's hangar. Shortly after entering the vessel to secure the area and search for Nicole, the team is ambushed by horrific, mutated monsters known as Necromorphs. Separated from his team during the ensuing quarantine, Isaac is thrust into an isolated nightmare, forced to scavenge makeshift weapons like the Plasma Cutter and survive the infested decks of the ship.
