Stereoplay Highlights 16 (1984) – The Ultimate Dynamic Range System Test | Symphonic Rock on Vinyl 🎧
Please scan the QR code for further information, it leads to discogs... Welcome back, hi-fi fanatics and vinyl nerds! In the golden era of analog audio, the prestigious German audio magazine Stereoplay created the legendary "Highlights" compilations to give their readers the ultimate stress-test records. Released in 1984, Volume 16 is an absolute standout. Unlike other editions that focus on 80s synth-pop, this record is a masterclass in Symphonic and Progressive Rock. It was explicitly designed to test your system's soundstage, depth, and ability to handle massive dynamic swings. Side A acts as an incredible showcase for The Moody Blues, testing your speakers' ability to separate layered orchestral arrangements from rock instrumentation. Side B shifts into complex guitar work with Peter Green and Camel, but the absolute crown jewel is John Miles's epic "Music". Pressed in Germany under the Ariola Eurodisc umbrella (mostly handled by the renowned Sonopress plant), this record features pristine dead-wax silence and incredible headroom. Grab a good cup of coffee or a nice glass of wine, find the sweet spot of your system, and sit back. I hope you enjoy these wonderful analog recordings just as deeply as I do. Keep it analog, and let's dive into the music! Key Track / Highlight: 🎧 The Ultimate Tracking & Dynamics Test: John Miles – "Music" (Side B, Track 1) If you want to know how good your cartridge tracks and how much headroom your amplifier has, this is it. "Music" transitions from a delicate, whisper-quiet piano intro into a massive, full-scale orchestral and rock crescendo. Pay close attention to the strings and the brass section when the band kicks in. A lesser turntable setup will sound congested or distort in the inner grooves, but when dialed in correctly, the sheer wall of sound will give you goosebumps!
