[Askold Murov] Symphony for Winds and Percussion (Score-Video)

The work was finalized between 1987 and 1988 and is dedicated to Shchedrin. In the second movement, the symphony quotes a melody from Shchedrin’s Second Concerto for Orchestra "The Bells" (specifically, Bars 2–3 of Figure 23 for the score). Regarding the premiere of this work, the composer recalled: My recent meeting with Yu. Nikolaevsky took place on "neutral" territory, in the city of Omsk, where he had traveled from Moscow and I from Novosibirsk. He was scheduled to conduct a concert featuring one of my latest works, the Symphony for Wind and Percussion. After the performance, I went to his dressing room to congratulate and embrace him. I saw my friend before me—exhausted, pale, with large beads of sweat on his face—who whispered in a trembling voice (indeed whispered, rather than spoke): "You know, this is a tragic piece."
