Dark & Disturbing Books Set In Asylums🕯️📖🔒
There’s something uniquely unsettling about books set in asylums. The locked doors, unreliable memories and the feeling that nobody can fully be trusted - including the narrator. In today’s video, I’m diving into books that use psychiatric hospitals and institutions as settings for mystery, horror, and psychological suspense. A small content note before we start: these books include themes surrounding mental illness, institutional abuse, trauma and psychiatric treatment. A lot of them include outdated or harmful attitudes from the periods they were written in that made me feel very uncomfortable while I was reading them. I wanted to approach this topic carefully while still celebrating the atmosphere and storytelling that make these books so compelling so I hope this comes across in the video. We’ve got a mix of gothic, horror and psychological thrillers so hopefully you’ll find a new favourite read from this list.
