The Disturbing Story Of Elihu Yale

The Disturbing Story Of Elihu Yale In 1670, when he was 21 years old and engaged as a clerk, Elihu Yale served an apprenticeship in the East India Company's Leadenhall Street headquarters in London. Elihu Yale may have obtained business knowledge while working at his father's merchant counting house, and his father's contacts could have helped him find job. The next year, in 1671, Yale was one of twenty men chosen to work as "Writers" in India. Elihu Yale was bailed out for £500 with the help of his father and brother David. Yale spent 20 years working for the East India Company. In 1684, he was assigned as the first commander of Fort St. George, the company's garrison in Madras (now Chennai), India. He succeeded many other agents, notably William Gyfford. While working for the corporation, Yale built a fortune, mostly through secret arrangements with Madras merchants, which went against the East India corporation's mandate. By 1692, his persistent violations of East India Company norms, as well as his growing discomfort over his unlawful profiting, had culminated in his removal from the governorship. 00:00 - 00:34 - Prologue 00:35 - 01:59 - Early Beginnings 02:00 - 04:02 - East India Company 04:03 - 06:38 - Donations/Collegiate School Of Connecticut 06:39 - 09:25 - Elihu Yale/Outro ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DISCLAIMER: I am not a journalist, and you should conduct your own investigation.
