This knot combines four knots: the crayfish eye knot, the crab eye knot, the kondigi knot, and the maemi knot. Four dorae knots and three gwidorae knots are tied together in a row to form the maemi knot. During the Joseon Dynasty, the cicada, associated with Taoist immortals, symbolized a peaceful life, and thus this knot was often used as a pocket knot for men.
