Nine Perfect Strangers Cast Reflects on Show’s Most Perfectly Devastating Moment With Nicole Kidman

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 trades in the sunny Tranquillum House in California for the snowy luxury of Zauberwald in the Austrian Alps, and while much has changed since Masha (Nicole Kidman) gathered her first group of strangers for controversial psychedelic treatments, one thing that hasn’t is the complex dynamics of those on the retreat. While the first season honed in on the Marconi family, who lost their son to suicide, the second features a strained mother-daughter pair consisting of the fabulous but aloof Victoria (Christine Baranski) and her brilliant but sullen adult child Imogen (Annie Murphy). The two struggle to bond and reconnect — a task that is further complicated by the presence of Victoria’s caretaker-slash-lover Matteo (Aras Aydin). Baranski started out taking on primarily comedic (and often musical) roles in beloved projects like Mamma Mia!, Chicago, and Into the Woods — which makes sense considering her extensive theater background, for which she won two Tony Awards for The Real Thing and Rumors. She is also an established sitcom actor, nabbing three Emmy nominations and one win for her role in Cybill, along with several more nominations for her turns on Frasier and The Big Bang Theory. Recently, however, Baranski has been taking on more equally acclaimed dramatic roles in shows like The Good Wife and its spinoff, The Good Fight, and The Gilded Age. Nine Perfect Strangers allows her to blend her comedic and dramatic chops. The same can be said for Murphy, who started out doing mostly dramas before her breakout role in the hilarious Schitt’s Creek, for which she also won an Emmy. Never one to be pigeonholed, she’s made some exciting choices in recent years, with memorable work in Black Mirror, Kevin Can F**k Himself, and Russian Doll. A Turkish actor, Aydin has been working steadily for years in Turkish film and television, with Nine Perfect Strangers marking his first role in English. Though audiences might not know him quite yet, that’s sure to change after this series, as he more than holds his own, even stealing scenes and impressing legends like Kidman.
