His words always carry wisdom, truth and a deep understanding of life. This poetry has been sung by many respected artists like Sardar Ali Takkar and Fayaz Khan Kheshgi, and it has lived in the hearts of Pashtuns for generations. Today, I am sharing my own composition of this beautiful piece. I have tried to bring its emotion and message in a simple and heartfelt way. I hope you feel the depth of these words the way I felt them while composing. ▶ ▶ Original lyrics with English Translation: بادشاهي د جهان څه كړې ‎ځان له ولې زياتۍ غم؟ What will you do with the kingdom of the world, When it only brings you endless sorrow? ‎دا انصاف تلل مشكل دي ‎څه به ډېر كړې څه به كم True justice is hard to find, You’ll do some more, some less - yet never enough. ‎ربه ماله كه دې راكړه ‎بادشاهي د كل جهان ‎زه به ئې وغورزوم له كوره ‎لكه سوټې په ډېران O Lord, even if You grant me The throne of the entire world, I would throw it out of my home, Like useless sticks into the dust. ‎خپل غمونه دې لا لږ دي؟ ‎د جهان غمونه غواړې ‎داسې تخت به څه كړې، څه كړې ‎چې پرې شپه او ورځې ژاړې Are your own sorrows not already enough, That you now seek the grief of the world? What good is a throne, what use is a crown, If you spend your nights and days in tears? ‎بادشاهي هله جوړېږي ‎چې نيم لګي شي نيم مړه كړي ‎چې يو كس د بل په غوښو ‎د خپل كور كوتري ماړه كړي Kingship is built only when Half the people are enslaved, half are slain, When a man feeds his own dogs With the flesh torn from another’s bones. ‎د ټټوانو په ګله كښې ‎غټ ټټو مخكښې روان وي ‎لوئې باچا د ځناورو ‎د هماو لوئې حېوان وي Among a herd of donkeys, It is the biggest donkey that walks ahead. The mightiest king of beasts Is often only the greatest animal. ‎دا دنيا د سپي لكۍ ده ‎نه نېغېږي نه سمېږي ‎په وجود توره پيشو ده ‎چې ئې وينځې لا تورېږيري This world is like a dog’s crooked tail - It can never be straightened or tamed. It is like a darkened cat - The more you wash it, the darker it becomes. ‎ماله راكړه څو ګلونه ‎يو نيازبين شانې جانان ‎يو وړوكې غوندې باغ ‎او په خوا ئې سيند روان Grant me instead a few flowers, A gentle beloved with a humble heart, A little garden of my own, And a quiet river flowing nearby. ‎چې ئې زه په غاړه ناست يم ‎په يخ سيوري د خرولې ‎په مزه مزه ليكمه ‎د مزې مزې غزلې Where I sit by its bank in the cool shade of trees, Writing slowly, sweetly, the verses of ghazals. ‎كله سوال منت جانان ته ‎كله بد او رد مولا ته ‎كله كله تاته ربه ‎د وړو په شان ګيلې At times I plead with my beloved, At times I complain against the Molvi (Clergy). Sometimes, O Lord, I turn to You With the innocent complaints of a child. ‎بادشاهي هغو له وركړه ‎چې زغملې ئې شي زور ‎چې په لاس لكه قصاب وي ‎په خصلت لكه منګور Give kingship only to those Who can endure its weight and cruelty - Whose hands are like a butcher’s knife, And whose nature is as fierce as wild beasts. ‎چې خپل ځان ته شي كولې ‎قرباني د ورور د وينې ‎هم هضمولې هم خوړې شي ‎د غريب د غوښو پينې Those who can sacrifice their own brothers, Drink their blood without remorse, And feast without shame On the flesh of the poor. ‎بادشاهي د جهان څه كړې ‎ځان له ولې زياتۍ غم؟ ‎دا انصاف تلل مشكل دي ‎څه به ډېر كړې څه به كم What will you do with the throne of the world, When it only weighs you down with sorrow? True justice is hard to find, You’ll do some more, some less - yet never enough.
