You've stopped hearing it as explosions. Now it's just weather. The paper is damp at the edges. You write anyway. You tell her the food is fine. You tell her the men are in good spirits. You tell her you sleep well. None of it is true. All of it is necessary. The candle flickers. You shield it with your hand. Somewhere down the line, someone coughs. A distant boom rolls through the earth. The flame steadies. You sign your name.
