The Buddha Episode 4, Magha Puja and the Return to Kapilavastu, tells of the time when Buddhism began to stand firmly, with many disciples and the early formation of the monastic order. In this episode, we explore the important event at Veluvana Monastery in Rajagaha, when 1,250 arahants gathered without prior appointment. There, the Buddha delivered the Ovada Patimokkha, which later became the origin of Magha Puja Day. The story also covers the permission for monks to have proper dwellings, King Bimbisara’s dedication of merit, the Brahmin Radha and the formal Sangha ordination known as ñatti-catuttha-kamma, Singalaka and the teaching of the Six Directions, and the Buddha’s return to Kapilavastu after many years since his renunciation. When the Buddha returned to his homeland, he taught King Suddhodana, the Sakya clan, Prince Nanda, and Rahula, who became the first novice monk in Buddhism.
