The historical center of Erice is on the top of Mount Saint Julian, a strategic center of great importance since ancient times. It was populated by the Elimi people and sought after by the Greeks and the Carthaginians. During the Arab-Norman period it had its major development, but with Trapani's assertion its decline became evident. Like many medieval towns that reinforced their defenses in Norman times, it had a strategic military position. The city center has maintained its medieval installation because there was no expansion in the following eras.
