Controlling Weight Loss and Anemia: Primary Goals When Managing Feline CKD | Step by Step Algorithm
Weight loss is often the first and only sign seen in cats with chronic renal disease. Learn how to approach a workup of a feline patient with weight loss, focused on the diagnostics and treatment of chronic kidney disease, in this edition of Step by Step, VetFolio’s popular video algorithm series. History, signalment and physical exam findings will first be discussed, as well as the foundational database that is recommended, along with more specific imaging and diagnostic testing. While there are many differentials for a feline patient with weight loss, this algorithm will follow the journey of the chronic kidney disease patient. After a more detailed diagnosis is made through the IRIS Staging system guidelines, treatment recommendations will be given, focusing on the two priority goals for feline chronic kidney disease patients: controlling weight loss and anemia. Additional therapy for feline CKD patients will be discussed, including supportive care options to improve quality of life.
