An alternator freewheel smooths the operation of the serpentine belt, thus protecting the auxiliary drive components. This reduces noise and fuel consumption. A defective alternator freewheel causes strong vibrations of the serpentine belt. This exerts high forces on the auxiliary drive components and can, for example, lead to the belt tensioner breaking. The INA special tool (part number 400 0444 10) can be used for the proper inspection and replacement of the alternator freewheel. Incidentally, an alternator freewheel is now installed in one out of every four vehicles.
