Your Voice Is Yourself (And That Changes Everything) | Kristin Linklater Interview
Interview starts at 18:19 Hosted by Mark McGuinness, Creative Coach. Renowned voice teacher Kristin Linklater on why ‘freeing the natural voice’ isn’t about performance tricks — it’s about undoing tension and letting breath, thought, and feeling do their job. A conversation about voice as embodied self, the myth of ‘breath control’, and why voice work can unlock creativity for writers and other artists too. CHAPTERS 00:00 Podcast intro 04:17 From Mark – Creators are made and not born 14:36 Introducing Kristin Linklater 18:19 Kristin Linklater Interview Kristin Linklater Kristin Linklater was one of the world’s most influential voice teachers, known for her work with actors and for bringing voice training back to first principles: the voice runs on breath and emotion, not control and ‘results’. Her classic books ‘Freeing the Natural Voice’ and ‘Freeing Shakespeare’s Voice’ have helped generations of performers, speakers, and creative professionals reclaim a voice that’s resonant, truthful, and fully alive. https://www.linklatervoice.com Big ideas in this conversation From technique to source – Linklater focuses less on managing the sound and more on freeing the underlying causes: breath, thought, and feeling. The sigh of relief – why a deep sigh can restore natural breathing more effectively than trying to ‘control’ the outflow. Voice as the whole self – ‘your voice is yourself’: when the voice is in the body, you’re not performing confidence, you’re inhabiting it. Projection vs sharing – instead of ‘throwing’ the voice, share thought and feeling to the back row through openness and intention. Voice and creativity – writers often become more prolific after voice work, because it helps you live nearer the boundary of conscious and unconscious mind. A practical challenge – go outside and call ‘ha / hey / ho’… then learn a poem by heart and speak it to friends (terror included). Show notes: https://lateralaction.com/articles/fr...
