Burgmüller - Etude Op. 105 No. 12 "L'héroïque"

The final piece in Burgmüller's Op. 105 set of etudes brings the book to a conclusion with a bang. This etude features a number of technical hurdles, including various written-out ornaments and trills (0:20, 0:54), octaves (1:47), arpeggios (1:59), and left hand leaps almost entirely throughout. Much of the piece seems to be constructed like a chaconne or passacaglia, with the left hand establishing a harmonic progression in the opening of the piece, followed by different melodic variations to introduce new technical hurdles at each new variation. • Grade Level: Early Advanced (Approx. RCM 7-8/ ABRSM 8+) • Technical Focus: trills and ornaments, octaves, left hand leaps, arpeggios ✍️ About the Composer Johann Friedrich Burgmüller (1806–1874) was a Romantic-era German composer and pianist, primarily known for his pedagogical piano works. His short character etudes are widely celebrated and still used by piano teachers to this day. While his 25 Easy and Progressive Studies (Op. 100) are his most famous, the more obscure 12 Études brillantes (Op. 105) from which this piece comes from are considered his most challenging set of etudes, and were written to prepare students for the demands of the great Romantic virtuosos like Liszt and Chopin.
