The Tableland Circuit - Kahurangi National Park

Kev heads to the Flora car park in Kahurangi National Park with Chris, Connor, and his daughter Anna to start another adventure. It wasn't their original destination, but a fallen tree had blocked their way to their intended location so a quick change of plans on the fly led them back to an area where many a previous adventure had already been enjoyed by SKOA. The Tableland Circuit is a two-day loop encompassing a climb up to Mount Arthur Hut and over Gordons Pyramid before dropping down to the Salisbury Lodge, which is the end of day 1. Although not taken on this tramp due to time constraints there are several possible side trips that can be added to day one - including summitting Mount Arthur, a side excursion off the top of Gordons Pyramid to the Clouston Mine and a visit to the Sphinx Valley cave. Day two is predominantly flat(ish) following Balloon Creek and Flora Stream back to the Flora car park. The route passes two significant rock shelters (Dry Rock Shelter and the Upper Gridiron Rock Shelter) and two huts (Gridiron Hut and Flora Hut). Keep an eye out for Whio which are common in the area after the excellent conservation efforts of the Friends of Flora and discarded Powelliphanta snail shells.
