POA Patient Profile: Amanda - Hemipelvectomy Amputee
Amanda was just finishing her first year of medical school when she was diagnosed with a large osteochondroma sarcoma in her pelvis. After efforts to treat and stop the progression of the disease failed, her doctors had no choice but to perform a hemipelvectomy (through the pelvis) amputation. Amanda's surgeon used an experimental procedure where the thigh muscles are packed into the pelvic region, leaving all nerves and blood vessels intact. The procedure was successful, leaving Amanda with a good padding of muscle at the amputation site which not only allows her to sit more comfortably, but provides a good surface for her prosthetic limb.
