🔴 Venous oxygen saturation (SvO₂ or ScvO₂): is the percentage of oxygen still bound to hemoglobin in venous blood after tissues have extracted the oxygen they need. 🟢 It reflects the balance between oxygen delivery (DO₂) and oxygen consumption (VO₂), making it a useful indicator of overall tissue oxygenation. 🔴 Importance of venous oxygen saturation: 1)Assesses tissue oxygen balance: A normal value suggests that oxygen delivery is meeting tissue demands. A low value indicates increased oxygen extraction or inadequate oxygen delivery. 2)Monitors critically ill patients: It is commonly used in intensive care to assess patients with shock, severe sepsis, heart failure, or major trauma. 3)Guides resuscitation: Changes in venous oxygen saturation help determine whether interventions such as fluid administration, blood transfusion, oxygen therapy, or inotropic support are improving oxygen delivery. 4)Evaluates cardiac output: Low venous oxygen saturation can indicate reduced cardiac output, especially when oxygen consumption is unchanged. 5)Detects changes before other signs: It may reveal impaired oxygen delivery before blood pressure or urine output become abnormal. 🔴 Normal values 🔵 Mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO₂): 60–80% (typically around 75%), measured from the pulmonary artery. 🔵 Central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO₂): 70–80%, measured from the superior vena cava via a central venous catheter. It is commonly used as a practical substitute for SvO₂, though the two are not identical.
