Why White Paint Ruins Realistic Rivets on Metallic Surfaces (Airbrush Demo)
In this video, I answer a viewer question about how to airbrush realistic rivets and make metal panels look three-dimensional, focusing specifically on paint choice and lighting behavior. This is Part 1 of a two-part series. Many artists render rivets over a metallic silver basecoat using over-reduced black and white. While this method often looks good in low or controlled lighting, it can lose realism under bright light or sunlight. The reason? Opaque white paint blocks the metallic reflectivity underneath, creating a flat, dead spot once the artwork is cleared. To demonstrate this clearly, I intentionally work over a metallic silver basecoat and walk through three different rivet renderings, explaining how each paint choice affects depth, realism, and light response. What you’ll learn in this video: Why opaque white highlights fail on metallic and pearlized bases How to protect metallic basecoats using intercoat clear How to choose and stay consistent with an imaginary light source How to use a freehand shield to control tiny circular shapes How to “bounce” paint off a shield instead of spraying directly How to create convincing highlights, shadows, and cast shadows Why metallic highlights and pearl highlights behave differently Common freehand shield issues and how paint buildup affects accuracy Small tricks to improve panel separation and depth I demonstrate: One rivet using white and black One rivet using metallic silver highlights One rivet using pearl white highlights I also explain why simply using metallic paint for highlights is not the best solution, and why pearl white can help—but still has limitations. In Part 2, I’ll show side-by-side comparisons under different lighting conditions, explain my preferred method for painting rivets on metallic bases, and demonstrate how to create the illusion of overlapping metal panels. If you airbrush: Automotive panels Helmets Gas tanks Illustration panels Realistic metal textures This breakdown will help you avoid common mistakes and make your rivets hold up under real-world lighting.
