Made Here EP.1 | How Wood Becomes Furniture

Where does wood begin before it becomes furniture? In this first episode of Made Here, I travel from Lagos to Oyo Owode to explore the hidden journey of wood — from forest to sawmill, and eventually into the homes we live in. Along the way, I meet Mr. Adejare, a sawmill artisan with over 35 years of experience, who walks me through the process of transforming timber into usable wood. From identifying tree species by their bark to explaining the realities of production, this visit revealed the skill, resilience, and knowledge that often go unseen behind the materials we use every day. I also learned about the challenges many artisans face, including unreliable power supply, rising operational costs, and limited access to modern equipment. Yet despite these obstacles, the craft continues — carried forward by dedicated craftsmen and the next generation learning the trade. This journey changed how I think about design, sourcing, and sustainability. At Kuvaah Design Studio, we believe that understanding materials means understanding the people behind them. That belief is helping shape the future of the Kuvaah Makers Collective (KMC) initiatives focused on artisan empowerment, craft preservation, training, and creating opportunities for future generations. Because when we understand where materials come from, we begin to value the people behind them. About Made Here Made Here is a documentary series exploring the materials, crafts, makers, and traditions shaping Nigeria's creative landscape.
