Here is the Meditation Place of King Udayana, the Ancient Balinese King at the Cliff Temple of Gunung Kawi, Tampaksiring, Bali. This is the masterpiece of the Warmadewa Dynasty in Bali. The Cliff Temple Complex of Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring is one of the monumental archaeological remains in Bali and is one of the sacred buildings of Ancient Bali. Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple, is included in the Banjar Penaka area, Tampaksiring Village, Tampaksiring District, Gianyar, Bali. Based on existing inscriptions, this hermitage complex was originally named Amarawati, estimated to have been built since the mid-11th century AD, during the Udayana Warmadewa dynasty. According to history, King Udayana and Empress Gunapriya Dharmapatni had three children, namely Airlangga, Marakata, and Anak Wungsu. The eldest, Airlangga, was later appointed King of Kahuripan in East Java. When Udayana died, the throne was handed over to Marakata, who later held the title Raja Sri Haji Paduka Dharmawangsa Marakata Pangkaja Stanattunggadewa who ruled from 944-948 Saka or 1025-1049 AD. After the death of Marakata, the construction of the Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple was continued by Anak Wungsu who ruled Bali from 971-999 Saka/1049-1080 AD. The entire temple complex was functioned as a temple, a means of worship for the royal family by King Anak Wungsu. The Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple Complex was first discovered by H.T. Damste in 1920. Research on the Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple Complex has been carried out since 1951 by J. C. Krygsman and continues to this day. The Gunung Kawi Temple complex, Tampaksiring, is one of the most impressive traces of the Warmadewa Dynasty's sculptures. We should be proud of this priceless masterpiece. Efforts to preserve the Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple are very important for science, education, history and culture. We have to take care of it together.
