Ovechkin Beats the Islanders With Dazzling OT Goal (3/1/2011)

March 1, 2011 - With great players, it doesn't matter how well you play against them - if you give them one chance, they will make you pay. For the majority of the night, the New York Islanders had been able to hold Alex Ovechkin in check. No one else on the Caps was able to break through New York's defense either, as the Islanders held onto a 1-0 lead late. Less than a minute away from their 4th loss on home ice in a row, Ovechkin chipped a loose puck to the corner where Caps deadline acquisition Jason Arnott was waiting. Arnott found Brooks Laich in front to tie the game and send it to overtime, where Ovechkin would take advantage of the extra space provided by four-on-four hockey. In the extra frame, Ovechkin showed fans a glimpse of the player they'd come to expect over his first five seasons. Picking up the puck at his own blue line, the Capitals captain turned on the jets, overpowering Frans Nielsen on his way to the goal before beating Islanders' goalie Nathan Lawson with a slick backhand move. 1st Period - 0:00 - Intro 1:02 - Pass to Marco Sturm for breakaway 1:46 - Big hit on Travis Hamonic 2nd Period - 2:16 - Hit on Bruno Gervais 2:23 - Ovechkam 3rd Period - 2:49 - Shot 3:33 - Shot and more chances for the Caps 3:45 - Backcheck against Kyle Okposo and end-to-end rush 4:05 - Assist on Brook Laich tying goal, 300th career assist 5:21 - End of regulation Overtime - 5:30 - Game-winning goal, 9th career overtime goal More classic Ovechkin games -    • Classic Ovechkin Games
