Ismat Chughtai (1915–1991) was one of the most courageous, outspoken, and pioneering feminist writers in modern Urdu literature. Known as 'Ismat Apa', she wrote openly about the suppressed feelings of women, education, and their rights in a conservative society and patriarchal structure. Early Life and Education Born: August 21, 1915, in Badaun (Uttar Pradesh). Family: She was the ninth of 10 siblings. Her father was in the government service, so her childhood was spent in Jodhpur, Agra, and Aligarh. Struggle: Her parents did not want her to pursue higher education, but Ismat threatened rebellion and completed her BA and later her Masters (B.A.) from Aligarh Muslim University. Literary Journey and Progressive Movement Early Attitudes: Ismat joined the Progressive Writers' Movement. She is considered a contemporary of Saadat Hasan Manto and Munshi Premchand.
