Fresh from the Wars of Italian Unification, many officers came to the USA to fight for the North, who unsuccessfully wooed Garibaldi to take command several times. These men would raise regiments in places like New York, recruit recent Italian immigrants as well as others to fight for them. In the South Italians also fought, particularly those who had settled in and around New Orleans.
