Nicolas Schmit: Social dimension of the Green Deal In this episode of “EU on Stage”, Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights of the European Commission, talks about the European Green Deal, i.e., the European carbon neutrality strategy. He elaborates how to manage the social-economic changes these measures bring to the daily lives of European citizens. Klaus Gniffke, former miner in the Ruhr Area in Germany and his granddaughter Julia Tiganj, researcher in the field of transition specialized in mining at the University of applied sciences Georg Agricola, share their experiences as well as their ideas to manage the energy transition imposed by the Green Deal. The third guest speaker is the Mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette, Georges Mischo, who explains to the young audience the history of the steel mills in the region, as well as their adaptation today to the more modern landscape of Esch-sur-Alzette. "EU on stage" is a series of six multilingual debates with the Luxembourgish MEPs and the European Commissioner Nicolas Schmit. The topics chosen are discussed from different angles with various experts and the audience. Subtitles are available in German, French, English and Luxembourgish. In order to promote democratic debates at the EU level, the initiative intends to increase public interaction with Luxembourgish MEPs and the EU Commissioner as well as to provide young EU citizens a platform to express their opinions.
