John DeLorean was an automotive engineer who created the first muscle car, the Pontiac GTO, and became the youngest vice president in General Motors’ history. But a corporate career did not satisfy him. In 1975, he founded his own company and built the legendary DeLorean DMC-12. DeLorean is the very time machine from the film Back to the Future. Production began in Northern Ireland with support from the British government. However, poor build quality, a weak engine, and a high price led the company to bankruptcy. In October 1982, John DeLorean was arrested on charges of drug smuggling, and soon after, the company shut down, having produced about 9,000 cars. In 1985, the DeLorean DMC-12 received a second life thanks to Back to the Future, where it became a time machine.
