There, repression forced them to flee again, leading the teenager and his family to Mayotte, where they faced racism. Before discovering France—and life on the streets because there was no one to welcome them. This is the story of David Maenda Kithoko, a journey of exile like thousands of others. A story, too, like few others. But David defied fate; he pursued his studies, graduated from Sciences Po Lyon, teaches at Lyon II University, and works for a social and solidarity economy organization. He leads Génération Lumière, an association that fights to have the impact of landmines in wars, particularly in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), recognized. Because behind every phone, every computer, every electric car, there are fragments of metals—cobalt, coltan, copper—and behind the metals, there is blood, war, death, and misery.
