I ordered some tried-and-true ARCTIC MX4 thermal paste in a syringe from China, along with two sets of ARCTIC thermal pads (1.5mm and 0.5mm thick). I decided to save money and skip the 1mm ones. To open the MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G, I needed anti-static gloves and a standard Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the cooling heatsink with two fans and the metal plate that partially serves as a heat sink for the memory chips and the GPU power supply. After disassembling the graphics card, I found a small amount of dust and dried-out factory thermal paste inside. It had apparently not been changed since purchase, as the warranty seal was still on one screw. The stock thermal pads haven't lost much of their shape or properties, but since I don't often want to look inside such components, I replaced the thermal paste with ARCTIC MX4 on the central chip and all the pads that help dissipate heat from the memory chips and video card chokes. This definitely won't hurt. The GTX 970 still allows you to play modern games in FHD at medium-high settings, and Steam statistics confirm the popularity of this model. After replacing the thermal pads, all that was left to do was reassemble everything in reverse order and run the "donut" test for comparison. In my case, temperatures dropped by about 10 degrees C, further proving that the procedure was worthwhile, and every couple of years, every computer component requires minimal attention. At the end of the video, I ran some basic tests on an old 775 system, clearly showing the temperatures in the BIOS and beyond, using no paste, an Arctic thermal pad, a budget thermal pad, and MX4 thermal pad for comparison. Obviously, paste fills the air gap between the processor and heatsink most effectively, but from our tests, we saw that the 1.5mm thermal pads from ARCTIC are actually quite good; at least, it's perfectly possible to work on a computer with them. I'll continue to keep an eye on the products of this German company and, whenever possible, use their high-quality materials in electronics. Where equipment isn't as expensive, it's also possible to look for something more affordable, as the Chinese market currently offers an excellent selection of such items and electronics in general.
