How to Remove an IV Catheter (Discontinue Peripheral IV in Dorsum of Hand) Nursing Skill
How to remove an IV (peripheral intravenous) catheter in the dorsum of the hand nursing skill technique. Nurses are required to insert and remove IVs on a regular basis. Hospitals and equipment manufacturers have protocols in place for how and when to discontinue an IV, so always verify the latest protocols before attempting an IV cannula removal or other nursing skills. In this video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates the removal of an IV (intravenous) catheter that was inserted in the dorsum of the hand. Before removing IVs, you'll want to perform hand hygiene and don gloves. You'll want to have gauze pads and tape prepared so that you can bandage the site after removal. During removal of the IV, you'll want to gently remove the surrounding tape without disturbing the IV. Once the tape is removed, you'll gently slide out the IV/cannula while applying gauze pads and pressure to the site for up to three minutes (or more) to prevent excessive bruising or bleeding. Be sure to dispose of all materials in the appropriate waste or sharps receptacle located in your healthcare facility. Always verify the specific protocols for your area when practicing nursing skills. Nursing Skills: • Nursing Skills Videos Notes: https://www.registerednursern.com/how...
