On the western edge of this was a fortified town called Caracalla, where the Romans were trying to hold off the Picts. By the time the Scoti were defeated by the Welsh, the Celtic conquerors had settled down in Scotland and Wales. The earliest Neolithic settlements in Scotland were in the Neolithic era about 4000 BC. Dál Riata was the first of the four kingdoms of Scotland to be founded on the west coast. The Picts were introduced to Christianity by the Irish missionaries, who were also the first to introduce Christianity to Scotland. The Pictish king Nechtan (c. 618-634) abolished the Celtic practices of the Picts, who lived in Scotland and Ireland, and converted them to Christianity. The Viking invasions of the 10th century saw the Gaels and Picts unite against each other, with the Picts eventually winning a decisive victory in the Battle of the Boyne in 1066, but the Vikings had won their war against the Picts, and Scotland had become a Viking-free country. The House of Alpin was divided between the Scottish and English monarchs, and the Scots held the upper hand in the war of succession. In 1212 King Malcolm IV died without issue, and the House of Dunkeld or Canmore took control of the kingdom. The last surviving child of his Norwegian wife, the late Queen Victoria, is also dead. In 1342, the Scots, led by Edward I, invaded Scotland, and took the English throne. However, King Robert II died before he was able to establish the House of Stuart as the dominant power in Scotland. The Stuart kings and queens ruled Scotland from 1603 to 1660, but the Stuart kings and queens ruled Britain for the next 250 years. The kings of the House of Stuart were descended from James I of the House of Lancaster, who ascended to the throne in 1715. 0:00:06 01 - Ch. 1: Scotland and the Romans 0:07:08 02 - Ch. 2: Christianity - The Rival Kingdoms 0:11:47 03 - Ch. 3: Early Wars of Races 0:20:49 04 - Ch. 4: Malcolm Canmore - The Norman Conquest 0:30:13 05 - Ch. 5: David I and His Times, pt 1 0:40:29 06 - Ch. 5: David I and His Times, pt 2 0:48:34 07 - Ch. 6: Malcolm and the Maiden 0:56:00 08 - Ch. 7: Encroachments of Edward I - Wallace 1:05:29 09 - Ch. 8: Bruce and the War of Independence 1:14:24 10 - Ch. 9: Decadence and Disasters - Reign of David II 1:24:49 11 - Ch. 10: Early Stuart Kings: Robert II 1:33:34 12 - Ch. 11: James I 1:40:21 13 - Ch. 12: James II 1:47:55 14 - Ch. 13: James III 1:59:25 15 - Ch. 14: James IV, pt 1 2:09:16 16 - Ch. 14: James IV, pt2 2:19:09 17 - Ch. 15: James V and the Reformation 2:31:26 18 - Ch. 16: The Minority of Mary Stuart 2:44:36 19 - Ch. 17: Regency of Arran 2:50:28 20 - Ch. 18: Regency of Mary of Guise 3:01:25 21 - Ch. 19: The Great Pillage, pt 1 3:11:52 22 - Ch. 19: The Great Pillage, pt 2 3:20:30 23 - Ch. 20: Mary in Scotland, pt 1 3:32:38 24 - Ch. 20: Mary in Scotland, pt 2 3:43:31 25 - Ch. 21: Minority of James I 3:55:33 26 - Ch. 22: Reign of James I, pt 1 4:04:14 27 - Ch. 22: Reign of James I, pt 2 4:12:48 28 - Ch. 22: Reign of James I, pt 3 4:23:55 29 - Ch. 23: The Gowrie Conspiracy, pt 1 4:33:02 30 - Ch. 23: The Gowrie Conspiracy, pt 2 4:44:19 31 - Ch. 24: Charles I, pt 1 4:53:42 32 - Ch. 24: Charles I, pt 2 5:04:21 33 - Ch. 24: Charles I, pt 3 5:14:31 34 - Ch. 24: Charles I, pt 4 5:25:44 35 - Ch. 24: Charles I, pt 5 5:35:12 36 - Ch. 24: Charles I, pt 6 5:44:59 37 - Ch. 25: Conquered Scotland 5:50:45 38 - Ch. 26: The Restoration, pt 1 6:00:26 39 - Ch. 26: The Restoration, pt 2 6:12:35 40 - Ch. 26: The Restoration, pt 3 6:21:42 41 - Ch. 26: The Restoration, pt 4 6:31:55 42 - Ch. 26: The Restoration, pt 5 6:41:12 43 - Ch. 27: William and Mary, pt 1 6:50:32 44 - Ch. 27: William and Mary, pt 2 7:00:05 45 - Ch. 28: Darien 7:12:45 46 - Ch. 29: Preliminaries to the Union 7:29:27 47 - Ch. 30: George I 7:42:51 48 - Ch. 31: The Argathelians and the Squadrone 7:58:44 49 - Ch. 32: The First Secession 8:06:22 50 - Ch. 33: The Last Jacobite Rising, pt 1 8:17:25 51 - Ch. 33: The Last Jacobite Rising, pt 2 8:26:04 52 - Ch. 33: The Last Jacobite Rising, pt 3 8:36:36 53 - Ch. 33: The Last Jacobite Rising, pt 4 8:46:49 54 - Conclusion #History #Scotland #audiobook
