Chitralekha (1964) › Film Synopsis : A king ignores his wife and continues his frequent visits to the royal dancer. Fed up with his ill-behavior, his wife decides to abandon the royal life and starts living in an ashram whereas he marries the dancer. Movie Plot : The story is set during the Maurya Empire and revolves around the courtesan Chitralekha and her love for Aryaputra Samant Bijgupt, a soldier serving under Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. The narrative explores themes of love, morality, and renunciation. When Bijgupt becomes infatuated with Chitralekha, it causes turmoil in his life and the lives of those around him. Yogi Kumargiri, a celibate ascetic, intervenes and persuades Chitralekha to leave her luxurious lifestyle and free Bijgupt from her influence.
