Breaking Down the Backstroke Technique
Get back to basics with these backstroke swimming tips from Division I swim coach Marc Christian. Swimming backstroke requires you to float on your back in a horizontal position with your head straight. Your body should roll from side to side in unison with your arm movements. With the backstroke, the goal should be to have your arms and legs always alternating. Your arms will move in a semicircular movement while your legs conduct a flutter kick. When it comes to your arms, try to remember to always enter the water pinky-first and exit the water with your thumb. For proper backstroke kicking, it should begin larger from your hips and get progressively smaller to your feet.
