What exactly is dialogic reading – and why is it so important for children's language development? In this video, Sandra Niebuhr explains how dialogic reading differs from traditional reading aloud and its enormous significance for child development. While traditional reading aloud often focuses on the adult, dialogic reading is about engaging in conversation with children, picking up on their thoughts, and constructing meaning together. How can educators engage in conversation with children instead of just reading aloud? How do language development and thinking emerge through shared dialogue? And how can children contribute their own experiences, ideas, and interpretations? The video illustrates how dialogic reading supports children in using language as a tool for understanding the world – and how educators can sensitively guide this process.
