Performer, producer, and activist Robert Hooks recieved the Helen Hayes Tribute. Hooks, a Washington, DC native, founded three significant Black theatre companies: New York’s Group Theatre Workshop, The Negro Ensemble Company, and the DC Black Repertory Company. He performed in many productions on and off Broadway, and starred in television's N.Y.P.D.
