But this rock isn't on Earth, and that's where the drama begins. The Perseverance rover found a rock called "Cheyava Waterfall" in Jezero Crater. It has "leopard spots"—light centers surrounded by dark rings—and, next to them, small black dots that the team nicknamed "poppy seeds." Inside, there are vivianite and greigite, minerals that on Earth form around decaying organic matter where microbes are at work. Add to that organic carbon right on the surface, and the whole thing looks like the "ashes" of ancient life. But science has been battling Mars for half a century—ever since the Viking probes of 1976, when one instrument said "there's something alive down here" and another said "there's nothing alive here." That's why the team's first move wasn't to celebrate the discovery, but to attack it: they checked the reflection on the instrument's glass, the contamination from Earth, and the noise from the equipment. And yet, all they could say was "potential biosignature."
