Can CX-5 take on Toyota RAV4 without a hybrid? (Mazda CX-5 2026 Review)

The all-new Mazda CX-5 medium SUV range has launched in Australia. It’s longer and roomier, every variant now fits all-wheel drive and, kicking off at under $40K list for the Pure grade, it’s priced throughout its range to undercut key rival Toyota RAV4 by a handy wedge. The variant on test here is the G25 Evolve AWD, priced from $42,990 before on-roads. What’s the catch? Mazda has elected to retain its naturally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol four and there are no hybrid or turbocharged powertrains yet offered for this new generation. Outputs are also down, to 138kW and 257Nm, and while fuel economy is improved it’s not nearly as efficient as some key rivals. A good or bad move?
