Buying an ARRI Alexa Mini: Career Changer or Money Pit?

A couple years ago I made the decision to invest in an ARRI Alexa Mini, which at the time was already an older camera. I still get asked about that decision pretty regularly, so in this video I break down the main reasons why I went that direction. For me it really came down to a few key things. First was name recognition. When you're working as a cinematographer, the gear you bring to set can influence how people perceive the project. ARRI has a reputation that producers, directors, and crew instantly recognize. Second is the sensor and color science. The Alexa line has been a gold standard in the industry for a long time. The image just holds together in a really natural way, especially when it comes to skin tones and highlight roll-off. I also talk about optics and lenses on professional film sets. A lot of the lenses designed for high-end cinema cameras really shine when paired with something like an Alexa. And finally there's the ecosystem. The Alexa Mini has been used on so many productions that the support system around it is incredibly strong — rigs, accessories, workflows, and crew familiarity.
