The earthquake that took the lives of Sister Clare and five other young aspirants began at 6:58 PM on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The nuns had had a very difficult week due to the heavy flooding that Playa Prieta had suffered a few days earlier. The school year was just two weeks away, and they found the school in a disastrous state: all the classrooms were inundated, the recently painted walls were ruined by the water, as were the chairs, tables, doors, and a large quantity of teaching materials that they had not had time to recover. Therefore, as soon as the water level began to recede, they began cleaning and trying to repair the mess. They worked with joy and generosity. The work was hard, because the receding water left several inches of mud on the ground. And they were also concerned about the many poor families who had lost everything, or almost everything, due to the floods. They were giving a guitar lesson and were about to join the rest of the nuns at home to pray the rosary as a community. There was no time. The powerful earthquake caused the building where the four nuns and seven girls were staying to collapse, and only five of them were rescued alive.
