Near a mature evergreen hedge is a good place, the hedge provides shelter for wildlife but also acts as a wildlife corridor and a place for birds to nest. Try to make your pond as big as possible, you won’t regret it, but any size body of water will encourage wildlife and help biodiversity. Try not to be too tidy in the garden, wildlife loves places to his like long grass and piles of twigs or sticks. I’ve made a log pile and a hibernaculum, Also, plenty of piles of organic waste. Dig the hole as deep as possible, this stops the water freezing during winter. Various depths also caters for different elements of nature and encourages biodiversity. So have layers of varying depths, like ‘shelves’ around the margins of the pond.
