Inside Dharavi’s Masterplan: New Homes, Open Spaces & a Live-Work Township For the first time ever, a comprehensive masterplan for Dharavi has been prepared and submitted to the Government of Maharashtra for approval — marking a real turning point in the world’s largest slum redevelopment project. This is not just another announcement. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is finally moving from promises to visible, on-ground progress. Under the masterplan, all housing is being built strictly as per government norms. Eligible residents will receive 350 sq ft brand-new homes within Dharavi, while ineligible residents will be provided 300 sq ft homes through subsidised or hire-purchase options — with rehabilitation ensured within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Despite major constraints like railway lines, the Mithi River, and airport proximity restrictions, the plan creates a self-contained township with modern amenities, mixed-use buildings, and over 100 acres of open spaces. By integrating homes, workplaces, schools, clinics, markets, and places of worship within walking distance, the Dharavi masterplan preserves the area’s unique live-and-work culture while improving health, dignity, and quality of life.
