The emphasis placed on morality, military drill, and patriotic songs, some believe, shaped the soldiers of the Great War. This teaching sometimes struggled to gain traction, especially after the 1906 law that established the separation of church and state and the division of families between Republicans and clergy. Moreover, many children forced to help on the farm were unable to attend school regularly. Former teachers recall their formative years at the National School of Education, discipline, and political commitment. A general recalls the workers' hostility toward the army. Poverty and social inequality were deeply felt by the most disadvantaged and often led them to become activists in left-wing parties. Furthermore, in the popular universities, a certain golden youth encountered the proletariat. The announcement of war and the death of Jaurès was intended to reconcile all classes of French society. ***** Comments Info ***** On YouTube channels, you are free to express your opinion, even if critical.
