"someday" by Casey Ruth Little (for Tiny Desk Contest 2025) ... "someday" is a song I wrote to, quite honestly, comfort myself about the future. it is the most human thing to push off ideas or goals or fears to "someday," sigh, and move on...I do it a LOT. but then "someday" comes, and suddenly, you've grown up. maybe you're the person that little-you dreamed about becoming. Or, maybe you became everything you said you wouldn't, but now you have that push to change. the line sequence I'm most proud of is definitely "someday, I'll be a carved stone and a bouquet it's cliche, but I hope we're both smiling as I slowly decay" because it's such a lullaby-esque tune, and I feel like those songs always have some morbid line snuck in them that definitely went over my head as a kid. I also just love the imagery and idea that I lived a life full enough that not only is someone sitting at my grave with flowers, smiling, reminiscing...but I'm smiling, too. In the ground. Or the sky. Or wherever I end up. bottom line is, "someday" is inevitable, and I'm learning to say "someday" with excitement, rather than dread. even if that is in lullaby form, complete with a morbidly sweet line about my own death. (also side-note, I couldn't NOT include the little harmonies and "hmms"-- they are like, my favorite part, and I heard them in my head as I was writing this. So I wanted you to hear them, too.) ... lyrics: “someday” i’m placing my bets on “come what may” (hmm mm mm) but too late did you say all that you needed to say (hmm mm) ‘cause “later” ’s always early and “always” slips away you’re “almost” at the ceiling and suddenly it’s… someday, someday and maybe all you thought that you grew got washed away, but things change so i won’t stop waiting i’ll keep saying… “someday…” someday i’ll be a carved stone and a bouquet (hmm mmm mmm) it’s cliche but i hope we’re both smiling as i slowly decay (hmm mmm) it plagues my every thought are we chasing what we’re not? take a pause or take the shot ‘cause suddenly it’ll be… someday, someday and maybe all you wanted came true somehow, someway, life’s strange so i won’t stop waiting “come what may” -ing whatever it may bring i’ll keep saying… “someday…”
