His first music lessons took place in Cannes, at his aunt’s home, where he discovered the piano—and the Mediterranean! As an adult, he realized that the sea was his greatest love. He even decided to translate it into music. Interestingly, he began composing far from the sea, in Burgundy! It was 1904, and Claude, at 42, was well into his career. Although married to Lily, he fell in love with Emma Barbac, who was also married. In despair, Lily attempted suicide. The affair caused a scandal, and Debussy lost many friends, especially since it wasn’t the first time—his previous partner, Gaby, had also tried to take her own life due to his infidelity. Seeking refuge, Debussy and Emma fled to Jersey, an island between France and England. There, in 1905, he completed La Mer and the couple welcomed a baby girl, Claude-Emma, affectionately nicknamed Chouchou. Although it is not labeled as such, Debussy’s work resembles a symphony in three movements—his only symphony—in which one could discern a central scherzo and a majestic finale. It also recalls the genre of the symphonic poem, but Debussy preferred the term “sketches.” Here, everything leans more toward suggestion than description. Each movement carries a title imbued with poetry, the kind of poetry that permeates all of Debussy’s music. We are transported to the ocean, following its undulations and shifting hues. The first movement, From Dawn to Noon on the Sea, portrays the evolving light on the water, culminating in an extraordinary palette of timbres that reveals the most beautiful reflections on calm waters. The second movement, Play of the Waves, becomes more agitated, depicting a sea disturbed by currents. The final movement, Dialogue of the Wind and the Sea, erupts in a storm where the two elements clash violently, culminating in a resounding timpani stroke that heralds the triumph of the wind! In this work, Debussy displays a gripping theatrical force and demonstrates his mastery in extracting both transparent and brilliant sonorities from the orchestra. 🔥🎧 Full Album available // Debussy: Nocturnes, La Mer by Eduard van Beinum 🔥🎧 **Choose my streaming platform** : https://lnk.to/debussyvanbeinum Other Album Available // Debussy: La Mer, Images, Nocturnes & Orchestral Works Manuel Rosenthal 🎧 Qobuz https://cutt.ly/5eN8rqBt Tidal https://cutt.ly/seN8rk5e 🎧 Apple Music https://cutt.ly/CeN8rTiB Deezer https://cutt.ly/PeN8rGLM 🎧 Amazon Music https://cutt.ly/ZeN8rMO7 Spotify https://cutt.ly/reN8r7d2 🎧 Youtube Music https://cutt.ly/FeN8wEEB Claude Debussy PLAYLIST (references recordings): • Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
