Nipah virus is a rare but serious virus that can infect both animals and humans. It belongs to the Henipavirus genus and can cause severe respiratory illness and inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). How it spreads The natural hosts are fruit bats, especially Pteropus fruit bats. Humans can become infected through: Contact with infected bats or their saliva, urine, or droppings. Eating contaminated food, such as raw date palm sap contaminated by bats. Contact with infected animals, particularly pigs. Close contact with an infected person (person-to-person transmission). Symptoms Symptoms usually appear 4–14 days after exposure and may include: Fever Headache Muscle aches Sore throat Cough or difficulty breathing Vomiting In severe cases, the infection can progress to: Encephalitis (brain inflammation) Seizures Coma How dangerous is it? Nipah virus can be very deadly. Outbreaks have had case-fatality rates ranging from about 40% to 75%, depending on healthcare access and outbreak circumstances. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment or widely available vaccine for routine human use, although vaccines and treatments are under development. Where has it occurred? Outbreaks have been reported mainly in: Bangladesh India Malaysia Singapore Prevention Avoid consuming raw date palm sap in affected regions. Avoid contact with sick animals. Practice good hand hygiene. Use protective measures when caring for infected individuals.
