In 2007, I accepted a position as a Safety Coordinator for a large food distribution company with one major challenge: their safety performance was struggling. High OSHA DART rates, rising workers' compensation costs, and a facility that had never had a dedicated safety professional before. Over the next three years, I focused on building relationships, earning employee trust, investigating incidents, performing inspections, and creating a stronger safety culture. The results were incredible. By the end of 2009, the facility achieved the lowest workers' compensation rate in the company and significantly improved its OSHA safety performance. Then, in 2010, I received news I never expected.
