Following her telephone conversation with President Donald Trump, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that Mexico has the best possible agreement with the United States compared to the rest of the world: "We are the best option for investment." The president explained that, for the next 90 days, tariffs will not increase and the USMCA will be safeguarded. Bilateral dialogue continues to reach a long-term agreement. The 25 percent tariffs on goods not covered by the agreement, as well as on automotive, steel, and aluminum, will continue, considering the discount for parts manufactured in USMCA countries. "Mexico means a lot to the United States; we are its main trading partner, and they are aware of this." She emphasized that this agreement did not entail any additional action on Mexico's part; one of the keys is mutual respect. "The important thing is not to confront, to defend our principles, to seek solutions, and to maintain a respectful relationship." She mentioned that both teams are maintaining communication to reconcile positions on various issues, such as tomatoes. Yesterday, there was a good meeting on airports. The federal chief executive highlighted progress in security; an agreement on this matter is practically finalized. On other matters, she celebrated the 10.6 percent increase in Mexican household income between 2022 and 2024, according to the 2024 National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH) reported by INEGI. During President López Obrador's entire six-year term, current household income increased 15.66 percent. The president emphasized that the reduction in inequalities between the richest and the poorest is even more significant: it fell from 35 to 14 times, considering that we became the most unequal country during neoliberal governments. She stated that the change in the economic model, which prioritizes the poorest, made possible wage increases, the implementation of Welfare Programs, the influx of investment, and job creation. She was confident that this progress will also lead to a reduction in poverty in the country. This weekend, the president will be in Querétaro and Guanajuato.
