Life in Drass Valley Kargil | Ladakh Bike Trip in 2025

Finally, it's time to start our returning journey to Jammu. But our friends that have visted Ladakh before had convinced me to have must stop at Drass Valley, Kargil District. Thanks to Ahmed Ali Ji (owner of homestay in Drass Valley) we were able to understand the rich culture and heritage of Drass. He told us about his experience with Brown Bears and that the best month to see brown bear or to do a brown bear expedition, one must come in the month of April, May, Sept and October. Drass is also considered as second most world's harshest town to live in winters. Temperature reaches -60 degree and the inhabitants have to survive in their houses for several months based on the stocks they have saved, chula (traditional stove made by mud) as it helps in cooking food and keeping the house warm. You can certainly spend 3 days in Drass and do high altitude trek, plan a visit to suru valley and try a bear expedition. I am also thankful to WWF-India for having such local initiatives like assisint with opening home stays and proving naturalist training to locals. It support local communities a lot! Next day we planned to move to Gulmarg and start next chapter of this series. The distance between Leh city to Drass is roughly 280 kilometers, and it will take approximately 6 hours to reach by bike or car, taking into account enjoyable rest stops and breathtaking scenery along the way. In India, the conflict is also referred to as Operation Vijay (Hindi: विजय, lit. 'Victory'), which was the codename of the Indian military operation in the region. The Indian Air Force acted jointly with the Indian Army to flush out the Pakistan Army and paramilitary troops from vacated Indian positions along the LoC, in what was designated as Operation Safed Sagar (ऑपरेशन सफेद सागर, lit. 'White Sea'). The conflict was triggered by the infiltration of Pakistani troops—disguised as Kashmiri militants—into strategic positions on the Indian side of the LoC, which serves as the de facto border between the two countries in the disputed region of Kashmir. During its initial stages, Pakistan blamed the fighting entirely on independent Kashmiri insurgents, but documents left behind by casualties and later statements by Pakistan's Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff showed the involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces led by General Ashraf Rashid. The Kargil War is the most recent example of high-altitude warfare in mountainous terrain, and as such, posed significant logistical problems for the combatting sides. It also marks one of only two instances of conventional warfare between nuclear-armed states (alongside the Sino-Soviet border conflict). India had conducted its first successful test in 1974; Pakistan, which had been developing its nuclear capability in secret since around the same time, conducted its first known tests in 1998, just two weeks after a second series of tests by India.
